Well, I tried to find a cite for the context of the quote with no luck. It's something I read years ago from Margaret Mead, but I can't remember where in her work I found it. She noticed that (in our culture) many women experienced a kind of freedom (from expectations, domestic responsibilities, ambitions, etc) and a great enthusiasm for life around the time of menopause -- at one point she referred to it as "25 years of post-menopausal zest." (googling around just gets out-of-context, variously worded quotes). I wish I could find the original.
